Just A Thought: Concerts Are Overrated

Concerts are so overrated. Especially if the tickets are $300! Now I’m sure their are some people who are willing to fork over $300 for a crappy seat to see their favorite artist preform but their is honestly no artist who will ever get that much money from my pocket for a nose bleed seat. I recently read a statement from Madonna, who is notorious for having outrageous ticket prices — comment on the public response to the price per seat for her upcoming concert tour. She said “Start saving your pennies now. People spend $300 on crazy things all the time, things like handbags. So work all year, scrape the money together and come to my show. I’m worth it” via Newsweek. I must  say the only time I’ve heard of someone spending $300 dollars on a handbag, is while watching one of those Real Housewives shows but never personally . Maybe by “people” she was referring to her filthy rich friends.

I did do my research and found that some tickets are indeed $300 and more, but there are cheaper options. I believe they were around the $60 range. The only catch is that the seats are located behind the stage… Now I know they aren’t literally behind the stage –well at least I think they’re not . But I guess pretty much they are saying you won’t be able to see much, if anything at all. My first thought when I saw the warning sign that was  in all caps was “I’d have my ass in someone elses’ seat for $60 dollars!”. Maybe I’m just being cheap I mean it is Madonna — and she is worth it — right … Well putting aging pop star Madonna to the side, paying $60 dollars for some seats that won’t even have a decent view of the stage + parking,  for any pop star is beyond me. Now a die hard fan might get some enjoyment by the fact that they’re just at the concert but everyone’s pockets are tight regardless. Madonna may need to take a class in accounting because pennies buy gum , not a ticket to one of her concerts — that’s half a paycheck… Just a Thought.

Just a Thought: 2012 Grammy Nominations

Image DetailGrammy ! Grammy ! Grammy ! It’s that time of the year, when the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences release the nominations for the annual Grammy Awards. This year the academy have made big changes to the annual show. Merging or discontinuing numerous categories. Bringing the number of categories from 109, all the way down to 79 (thank god). Of course they didn’t get rid of any of the main categories such as Album of the Year and Record of the Year. But categories that were cut include the likes of , Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals and Best Contemporary R&B Album. So Grammy sweeps, where artist win 7 or 8 categories in one year. Will be a lot less likely to see now. To me the Grammy category cut was very necessary and  makes a Grammy win more exclusive.  However the cut will also lead to a lot more, salty artist. Fans got a little taste of that bitterness this year. With alleged snubs all across the board. The more vocal Jill Scott took to Twitter to vent her frustration about her #1 Album, Light of the Sun receiving not a single nomination. And newcomer Miguel also took to Twitter to express his resentment of the nominations “I’m F*cking Pissed Yo. I don’t think I’m Gods gift to music but I know the Album or at LEAST Sure Thing should have been Nominated.,” he tweeted.  Ok.. Now its wonderful to be recognized for your work, especially if you put your heart into it. But really the Grammys? What does a Grammy win really do for an artist? Are there studies showing that a Grammy win for Best Country Album or Best R&B Performance boost sales? Maybe it helps the artist sell more tickets to shows. It seems like its just a self esteem thing . If the music is good. Its good. Grammy or not. It would be interesting to hear opinions of very recognized and veteran artist about the category cut. The best example this year would probably be the Queen Bee, Beyonce. Who was almost shut out of the awards. Receiving only two nominations for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration with “Party” featuring Andre 3000 and Best Long Form Music Video for the “I Am…Tour”. A big disappointment  from her usual showing. If this was last year Beyonce would more than likely have received a nomination for the now defunct category  Best Contemporary R&B Album, a category she has won for all 3 of her previous solo albums. She would have probably  received a nomination in all the female vocal performance categories. Separate gender categories are also a thing of the past this year. But what artist doesn’t feel snubbed when the Grammy nominations come out? Lets remember people the Grammy Awards is a national telecast pushing for …ratings. And possibly basing their nominations on the popularity of the artist and not the quality of material they are putting out. Hmmmm. Just a thought.
